TTF stands for Transition Town Forres, a name we choose when we started in January 2008 as part of a larger network, a movement called Transition Towns, in 2008.

Transition Town Forres is now a charity and a company limited by guarantee and we are currently funded by the Climate Challenge Fund to lower the carbon emissions in Forres.

The word "transition" refers to the change that needs to take place when we move away from fossil fuel dependency to a more sustainable and resilient way of life.

The transition movement was founded by Rob Hopkins, a teacher in Permaculture, in 2005 and has grown to now encompass more than 300 villages, neighbourhoods, towns, islands, cities and even councils in the UK and several thousand "transition initiatives" have started worldwide.

The best way to learn what "Transition towns" stand for is probably to listen to Rob himself.

Here is a one hour video clip by Rob Hopkins about the Transition movement.

There are any number of You Tube clips of varying length if you search for Rob Hopkins or Transition Towns.

We have put an excellent 17 min clip under our Inspiring Stories and Clips section.

Are you concerned about the challenges facing us due to climate change?

would you like to:

  • take personal action – what can we do individually and as a town?
  • make contact with other concerned Forres citizens?
  • be proactive instead of reactive?
  • choose your actions or be forced to act?
  • learn more about climate change and peak oil?

Get in touch with us, or visit our Farmers Market on the second Saturday of every month at Anderson's playground.

Anyone who live in Forres, and many who visit, know that this is a very special place with very active and engaged people. A lot of very good things are happening in Forres. Regardless though of our good fortune of living in this beautiful place the world around us is changing. The economic climate is currently unstable, climate change (be it warmer, wetter or simply changing) is causing grave concern and many people are feeling lost in terms of what they can do.

TTF work to find practical and positive solutions in Forres. Everyone is welcome. Our focus has been on food with the establishment of the Community Garden at Bogton Road and our Farmers Markets (once a month on Anderson's playground), but there is also an energy project, a very active group sharing skills (called the Skill-Share Group), a food directory is being produced at the moment, we also show films about various topics and we have recently put almost 50 books in the library for general use.

We are lucky to already have a large number of community initiatives in and around Forres. Some people think we are linked more with some existing groups than with others but TTF does not have preferences, we work with anyone who wishes to make Forres an even better, healthier and more resilient community. We have a strong interest in the enviroment but we are also very concerned about the economic future as well as the wellbeing of both people and the planet.

Some of the groups we work with are

  • Moray Waste Busters
  • Forres Community Woodland Trust
  • Forres Area Forum
  • Forres in Bloom
  • Forres Group Action
  • Forres Community Council
  • LETS
  • and anyone else who wants to cooperate for a more sustainable life in Forres.

We are quite a number of people involved and if you want to speak to a person instead of reading more on the internet we welcome your call.
Feel free to contact Marie Jacques who is chair of TTF, on 672956, or Carin Schwartz on 696266 for more information.
